The good news: you will probably not get sick from silverfish in your home, and neither will your pets or children. There has never been a study that we are aware of that proves silverfish make you sick. The bad news: what they eat. Unfortunately, silverfish feed on things such as silk, synthetic fabrics and cotton. In other words, they are eating your clothing and furniture upholstery. It can be very unnerving to put on a pair of pants or a shirt and have a silverfish come crawling out. Also, these nasty pests prefer a moist environment, so you will often find them crawling around your kitchen sink (embarrassing when company is around), bathroom and basement. These rooms typically have some degree of moisture, so it is likely you would have them here. Finally, and most disturbing, silverfish, given their size and shape, can and do easily get into your foodstuffs and eat them, or lay eggs in the packaging (i.e. cereal, flour, sugar, crackers, etc.).
